4 in 10 Women 50+ Have Varicose Veins

Are you female and over 50?

If you are suffering from varicose veins, it may not be good news, but could be of some comfort to know that you’re not alone.

In fact figures from the Chicago Vein Institute suggest that varicose veins affect 41% of women over the age of 50, making it a very large group of sufferers.

This common circulation problem can cause considerable distress. Initially, the concern may be largely cosmetic. Varicose veins are unpleasant to look at and all the more so as they tend to suggest that the person is of a more mature age.

As the condition progresses, the concerns include increasing achiness and tiredness, then pain which at first occasional, will eventually develop to become more continuous. When varicose veins are more advanced, the poor circulation can also cause skin issues such as itchiness, eczema and dry skin, as the blood supply and oxygen are not getting to the cells. Even ulcers can arise from varicose veins, which can take a long time to heal even with specialist care. See Leg Ulcers Treatment Guidelines.

It is worth understanding that unfortunately varicose veins are not a problem which will go away. There is no cream or pill to resolve the problem and while exercise and putting your legs up can alleviate the symptoms, they will not bring about healing. Once the veins have become inefficient it is a cyclical downward spiral.

The good news is that modern varicose vein treatments can remove the damaged veins and give a rapid improvement for the patient.

The private sector offers a number of treatment options on a ‘day case’ basis:

  • ClariVein® treatment from £1,895 – a mechanical action combines with a special chemical to seal the vein
  • EVLA treatment from £1,650 – laser treatment to destroy the veins from the inside
  • Foam sclerotherapy from £500 – a chemical injection which works to get rid of smaller varicose and larger thread veins
  • Micro surgery from £500 – most often used alongside other treatments, physically removing the troublesome veins after laser/injections
