Best Thread Vein Clinics in London

harley street varicose veinsLooking to have thread veins treated? For good results, you want to be sure you’re selecting a good clinic where your needs will be fully understood and met.

It’s not enough to assume that they all have to meet a certain standard. Surprisingly, there are no minimum standards for training, qualifications, experience or even insurance to protect you.

There are now many high street salons offering laser and IPL treatments such as hair removal and a number venture into using the same technology for treatment of other conditions such as spider veins or thread veins. Yet salon-based laser and IPL practitioners are usually not medically trained and it can be risky having skin and vein treatments which are normally considered to be more medical in nature.

So it’s important to choose carefully and find a clinic that specialises in thread vein treatment.

What should you look for in a vein treatment clinic? Here are a few suggestions that will help you to identify appropriate providers.

1/ Expert practitioners

There’s no substitute for medical training when it comes to diagnosing and treating veins. Thread veins and spider veins may seem to be primarily a cosmetic issue, but they are caused by inefficient or defective veins. This means that they are a vascular problem and therefore medical in nature.

Things to look for include:

  • Medical qualifications – doctor or surgeon
  • Additional training/expertise – specifically in vein treatments

At Cosmedics’ Vein Treatment Centre, all treatments are carried out by medically qualified personnel who have additional training and extensive experience in skin treatments, including those of a vascular nature. They have excellent track record in treating spider/thread veins on the face and body.

2/ Specialist clinic

A clinic specialising in vein treatments will be far more likely to have the practitioners, equipment, expertise and insurance to cater for conditions such as spider veins and thread veins. Don’t be afraid to ask for more information if there’s anything you’re not sure about.

At Cosmedics’ Vein Treatment Centre, there is a choice of 4 London-based treatment centres catering to facial and leg veins and vascular blemishes.

  1. Harley Street Clinic:
    41 Harley Street, London, W1G 8QH
  2. Putney Clinic:
    4 Disraeli Road, Putney, London, SW15 2DS
  3. South Kensington:
The Smart Clinics, 30 Thurloe Place, South Kensington, London, SW7 2JE
  4. City of London:
    42 New Broad Street, London, EC2M 1JD

3/ Range of treatment options

One size does not fit all. Facial veins vs leg veins require a very different approach and technique. Veins also vary by size and complexity. Depending on the nature of your veins, a different treatment may be in order.

Look for a clinic that offers a choice of treatments.

Cosmedics’ London Vein Centre offers 3:

  1. Laser Treatment
The sophisticated Harmony XL Pro Laser treatment is available at both London Vein Treatment Centres in Harley Street and Putney. As well as destroying the thread veins, the advanced laser energy also works to stimulate healing and cell renewal in the treated area for clearer-looking skin. It is a gentle and effective treatment for facial thread veins on the face and also deals with smaller spider veins on the legs.
  2. Injectable Treatment
For larger thread veins (e.g. purple/blue leg veins), microsclerotherapy injections may be a preferable option. This treatment is available in all of the London Vein Treatment centres.
  3. Microcautery Treatment
The company also offer micro-cautery treatment, which uses a special probe to deliver a short burst of intense heat in a very precise way in order to destroy thread veins and spider veins. This is a fast and effective treatment and is often used alongside other methods for a more comprehensive result

Spider Veins vs Thread Veins – What’s the Difference?

thread vein legsThread veins and spider veins are essentially different words for the same vascular problem.

They describe a condition whereby veins are visible at the skin’s surface. The condition is caused by dilated or broken veins near the surface of the skin. This causes improper blood flow and leaves blood gathering in the veins rather than flowing at its normal rate. The blood is then visible through the skin in certain places, appearing as fine pink, red, purple or bluish lines. If you press the skin, the colour often temporarily disappears, but will reappear quickly when blood gathers again.

If there is any distinction between the terms ‘spider veins’ and ‘thread veins’ it may relate to the size. The term spider veins may indicate smaller and more delicate web-like veins, such as those found on the face, while thread veins may be expected to be bigger. However, many clients refer to larger visible veins on the leg as spider veins as well.

The medical name for this condition is telangiectasia. They are smaller than varicose veins and tend not to cause any physical symptoms such as itchiness or discomfort. The main concern is that they are unsightly, especially when they appear on the face or legs.

It is important to have a correct diagnosis of spider veins so that the correct treatment can be delivered.

Vitamin IV Drips, Expert Doctor’s Advice in Yahoo!

women's healthDr Ross Perry provided his expert advice in Women’s Health on the merits of IV drips.

The popular London GP and skin/veins doctor founded The London Vein Centre for thread vein treatments. He is often asked to give medical advice and opinion for media features.

The article on the Women’s Health website has also been featured on Yahoo! and warns:

“Experts warn vitamin IV drips, popular with celebrities, could harm your body”

Celebrity fans of the treatment reportedly include Adele, Rihanna and Chrissy Teigan; but after early criticism that it was a waste of money, experts are now saying that IV infusion could actually be harmful to the body as it could lead to ‘dangerously high’ levels of nutrients.

The treatment is designed to deliver vitamins, minerals and other nutrients directly to the blood through intravenous delivery.

Yet one expert said that IV drips could contain up to 600 times the required amount.

In 2019, Professor Stephen Powis said:

“People who are healthy do not need IV drips,’ he said. ‘At best they are an expensive way to fill your bladder – and then flush hundreds of pounds down the toilet – but at worst they can cause significant damage to your health.”

Women’s Health asked Dr Ross Perry for an up to date and balanced view. He said:

“One of the main selling points of these vitamin drips is their apparent ability to deliver a high dose of Vitamin D, amongst other all-important daily vitamins our bodies need to be healthy.

“However, it does take the body a long time to break these vitamins down and administering them excessively can lead to health problems such as loss of bone density, heart attack, nausea, headaches, and kidney problems.”

Women’s Health concluded:

“Still, given the therapy’s pretty dismal risk / reward ratio, we’d urge you give this particular wellness aid a wide swerve.

“And please do keep in mind that if something promises to speed your path to peak wellness, without you contributing much besides a generous chunk of your paycheque, it is probably too good to be true.”

Angioma – Persistent Red Blood Blister Spot

If you have a persistent red spot on your skin, then it may be an angioma – a ‘blood blister’ caused by spider veins and tiny vessels.

These red blemishes can look quite ‘angry’ and unpleasant, like red moles. However, there’s nothing to be worried about, angiomas are not medically harmful, just unsightly.

Having said that, if you do have any concerns that it is a worrying mole or something ‘suspicious’, then it’s always best to get it checked out.

What is angioma?

An angioma is a small growth or lump caused by blood vessels. It is a vascular condition and not cancerous.

They can appear anywhere on the skin – face or body – and are more common with age. Cherry haemangioma are a type of angioma which are bright red spots.

The most common reason for getting angioma removed is cosmetic, as they can be quite noticeable and patients prefer to get rid of them. Unfortunately, treatment for ‘cosmetic’ issues is very limited on the NHS, so private treatment is often the only option. This can be arranged in specialist private clinics like the London Vein Centre, where experienced doctors offer angioma removal treatment with no waiting lists. The team use special techniques to minimise discomfort and scarring.

Angioma can be removed in a number of ways:

  • The latest Nd:Yag laser treatment
  • Micro-cautery laser
  • Surgical removal with our skilled and experienced doctors and surgeons is a last resort option for larger angiomas (or where other treatment options are not appropriate)

As our doctors are also skilled in mole removal, they can perform accurate diagnosis and can also arrange testing of the lesion when it has been removed where required or recommended.

Main Causes of Varicose Veins – As Seen in Mirror

Expert Advice on Varicose Veins

daily-mirrorVaricose veins expert Dr Ross Perry, founder of The London Vein Centre, tells the Mirror why some veins are more pronounced than others in its feature “Varicose veins main causes”.

As the article explained:

“Some veins are more pronounced than others, with varicose veins being significantly dominant.”

The function of veins is to carry blood back to the heart. They’re not as strong or thick as arteries, but they contain valves which ensure that the blood only goes in one direction – to the heart.

Varicose veins are a very common condition which affect around 25% of all adults and even more in women. They are typically swollen, raised and discoloured veins on the lower legs with a noticeable purple/blue hue. They occur when the veins become dilated and enlarged.

The feature in the Mirror explores the main causes of varicose veins, saying:

“Turns out, sitting AND standing for too long increases your risk”

The inactivity allows blood to pool in the legs, which puts pressure on the valves within the veins. Patients see spider veins and thread veins appearing – smaller reddish veins – as well as the varicose veins with their characteristic twisted and bulging appearance.

Dr Ross Perry told the Mirror:

“It depends on the natural size and position of the vein.

“They typically expand more when they are lower than the heart so leg veins are the most common as that is where the most effect of gravity has on them.”

Main Causes of Varicose Veins

The Mirror feature listed the main causes of varicose veins:

  • Pregnancy
  • Menopause
  • Age over 50
  • Menopause
  • Extended periods of standing
  • Obesity
  • Prior injury
  • Family history

Unfortunately the NHS is unable to treat the majority of cases, as it views many cases as ‘cosmetic’, yet symptoms can become quite severe if varicose veins are allowed to develop. More severe symptoms can be very uncomfortable as well as unsightly. Potential signs of severe varicose include:

  • Severe and continuous pain
  • Noticeable and ongoing swelling
  • Heaviness and/or dull, achy feeling – especially at the end of the day, or after physical activity
  • Varicose veins look red and feel warm and tender to the touch
  • Varicose veins are prone to bleeding – either due to injury or spontaneous bleeding
  • Dry, itchy, discoloured, and/or inflamed skin around the veins
  • Ulcers/sores

NHS Treatment for Severe Varicose Veins

Patients with severe varicose veins can visit the GP to see whether they may qualify for NHS treatment. The GP will assess the veins, looking especially for signs of ulceration, pain, bleeding or skin colour changes.

Dr Ross Perry is a GP as well as founder of the London Vein Treatment Centre. He says:

“In most cases, your GP will advise either compression stockings to help manage symptoms (usually for six months) or to go private.

“The criteria for referral to an NHS hospital is very strict, so you won’t be able to have them removed for purely cosmetic reasons on the NHS.”

Laser Venous Lake Lip Blister Treatment

The latest Nd:Yag laser treatment is now available in London for Venous Lake.

Venous lake is a condition where patients develop a ‘blood blister’ – a permanent dark spot on the lip caused by blood pooling. This is most commonly on the bottom lip and is often a result of sun damage.

Venous lake blemishes are not medically harmful, but they can be an aesthetic concern for patients who don’t like the look of them and find them difficult to hide, even with makeup, as the blood gives them an intense purple or blue colouration due to the enlarged blood capillary, vein or vessel which is the root of the problem.

Laser Venous Lake Treatment

The London Vein Centre offers the latest advanced treatment which is fast and pain-free.

The company’s expert doctors and surgeons are trained in the use of Nd:YAG laser equipment for cosmetic facial vascular concerns. As well as treating venous lake, they also take care of spider veins, broken capillaries and thread veins.

Can Acupuncture Treat Thread Veins?

If you’ve developed thread veins and are researching the options for treating them, one option you may come across is acupuncture.

The alternative therapy route appeals to clients who like the idea of natural treatments. They may appear to be cheaper and easier than the more medical options like laser or surgery, but do they work?

In summary, there is some limited evidence in favour of using acupuncture to improve thread veins, but far better results can be expected with laser, injections or surgery that have been clinically proven.

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture is literally thousands of years old and is a form of Chinese medicine which involves inserting very fine needles into the skin at specific points. The intention is to rebalance the flow of energy through the body by tapping into strategic points where needles can stimulate nerve, muscles and connective tissues, boosting the body’s  circulation as well as production of natural pain relief. Many people swear by acupuncture, but research into its medical effectiveness is unclear.

What are thread veins?

Thread veins and spider veins are caused by improper blood flow which leaves blood pooling in certain places so that it is visible through the skin.

So can acupuncture help thread veins?

Research results into the effectiveness of acupuncture for treating thread veins have been mixed. There are some clinical studies that have demonstrated that acupuncture not only stimulates pain relief in the body but also provokes peripheral vasodilation, or widening of the veins, which can result in reduced blood pressure and affect blood flow.

For example, study https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3388479/ states:

” Our results suggest that acupuncture can affect blood flow of the peripheral, mesenteric, and retrobulbar arteries.”

However, other studies have been less favourable and there is certainly no significant body of evidence to support acupuncture for treating thread veins.

It is unlikely to cause further harm, so if you have previously experienced good results and have a local practitioner that you trust, you could explore it safely.

However, for more consistently reliable results, then medical methods offer clinically proven evidence. The cheapest and quickest solution in the long run may well be to book into a medical vein treatment centre to explore the options.

Reliable and Safe Treatment for Thread Veins

For a more effective treatment, Cosmedics’ London Vein Treatment Centre offers non-invasive options. These are medically proven with high success rates.

7 Home Remedies for Varicose Veins

If you’re looking for treatment for unsightly and uncomfortable varicose veins, you’re not alone. Millions of women and men suffer with the condition and it’s estimated that 1 in 5 of us will experience it at some point in our lives.

When you start to notice varicose veins or see them getting worse, one of the first things many people think of is whether they can do anything about it themselves through home remedies.

It’s definitely a good philosophy to try and do what you can, especially with a condition like varicose veins which can be linked to lifestyle factors.

A search of the internet will inevitably bring forth a plethora of suggestions for home remedies, but is it worth it?

Are self-help varicose veins treatments beneficial?

However, unfortunately in the case of varicose veins, self-help measures will be of limited benefit. The reason is that varicose veins are fundamentally damaged. They’ve become faulty and the damage is irreversible, which means that the only effective remedy is medical intervention.

Depending on the severity of your veins, home remedies may provide some relief from the appearance and symptoms of discomfort. They may be able to slow down the progression of the problem. So while they won’t be able to reverse or cure the damaged veins, it is worth trying to see if self-help measures are helpful.

7 home remedies for varicose veins

We’ve compiled a list of suggested treatments to try at home for varicose veins.

  1. Exercise
The number one suggested self-help remedy for varicose veins is about keeping active. Exercise boosts your circulation and this gets the blood moving in your vessels rather than pooling in the inefficient veins. It can also improve blood pressure, which is a contributory factor. It’s important to choose something you can do consistently a few times a week. If you want to start running or gym, that’s great, but you don’t need anything too strenuous – low impact exercises like swimming or walking still boost your circulation.
  2. Compression stockings
Wearing knee-high compression stockings has been demonstrated to reduce the discomfort of varicose veins. These simply apply pressure which helps the muscles and veins to keep the blood circulating and stop it pooling. They’re readily available online or in high street chemists. Unfortunately, they’re fairly unattractive, especially in summer when you may want to wear shorter clothing. They can also be difficult to fit into shoes.
  3. Maintain/work towards a healthy weight
Excess weight adds pressure on the circulatory system, so if you are carrying extra weight, losing some can be helpful in alleviating the pressure. The best way to achieve a healthy weight is through a healthy diet and active lifestyle. You need to be in calorie deficit, which means expending more calories than you consume.
  4. Non-restrictive clothing
While compression stockings can be helpful, the same does not apply to tight fitting clothing. If your clothes are too tight (e.g. around the ankles or waist), this can restrict blood flow in an unhelpful way. Loose clothing can help to improve the blood supply to your lower body.
  5. Elevate your legs
Raising your legs will reduce pressure in the leg veins and allow blood to flower more easily back to the heart. If you are going to be sitting for a long period of work or relaxation, try and keep your legs elevated. You need to try and get your legs raised to the same level or higher than your heart.
  6. Massage
Gently massaging the affected areas can help to stimulate circulation and this in turn can help to keep the blood moving through the veins. Avoid pressing too hard on the veins as you don’t want to cause any damage. Use massage oil or moisturiser as this makes it much smoother and easier. It also hydrates the skin nicely.
  7. Avoid sitting/standing too long
Try and keep active by changing position frequently, getting up and moving around. Any movement helps to keep the blood flowing smoothly. Also try to avoid sitting with crossed legs, as this can restrict blood flow through the legs.

Bear in mind that the best self-help treatments are preventative, so don’t expect a full cure. However, they can help to slow deterioration of your veins and make you feel more comfortable.
