Expert tips for thread veins

News - as seen inDr Ross Perry was among the leading experts asked to provide their provided his medical expertise for GB News feature on spider veins.

Telangiectasias, also known as spider veins or thread veins, are small, dilated blood vessels that can appear near the surface of the skin or mucous membranes. They can appear anywhere on the body, but they are most common on the face, legs, and trunk. They are often red, purple, or blue in colour, and they may be flat or raised. Spider veins, a type of telangiectasia, have a central red dot with radiating branches. They are usually harmless, the greatest issue being their appearance, which patients find unsightly.

Thread vein causes

Dr Ross Perry, GP and medical director of Cosmedics skin clinics, told GB News:

“Facial spider veins are relatively common and are caused by genetics, too much alcohol, sun exposure and rosacea.

“As we age, the skin becomes thinner and blood vessels become visible, our pores may also increase in size.”

Thread vein treatment options

Dr Perry explained:

“The most effective treatments for spider veins are lasers and intense pulsed light therapies which, work by focusing on colour.”

Laser thread vein treatments are available at Cosmedics’ London Vein Treatment Centres, where a range of services are available for tackling common cosmetic vascular problems. The company also offers sclerotherapy injections which cause the vein to collapse and seal itself off.

Treated thread veins are slowly broken down and removed by the body while blood flows through alternative, healthier vessels and veins.

Natural remedies for spider veins

Dr Ross Perry had a few natural self-help remedies to suggest:

“You can look at natural remedies for varicose veins such as apple cider vinegar which can help to improve healthy blood flow and circulation, and it can reduce the appearance of spider veins and stop new ones from forming. Diet is also a contributing factor.

“Foods high in fibre and rich in antioxidants are a good choice, but equally you should look to avoid saturated fats, processed sugars, alcohol and cigarettes, which will all help with having healthy circulation.”

Other natural products that Dr Perry suggested included ingredients witch hazel, bilberry and horse chestnut.

In terms of diet, he recommended that garlic, turmeric and cayenne pepper may be helpful.

“Essential oils are also a good choice for nipping spider veins in the bud before they get bigger.”
