Spider Veins vs Thread Veins – What’s the Difference?
Thread veins and spider veins are essentially different words for the same vascular problem.
They describe a condition whereby veins are visible at the skin’s surface. The condition is caused by dilated or broken veins near the surface of the skin. This causes improper blood flow and leaves blood gathering in the veins rather than flowing at its normal rate. The blood is then visible through the skin in certain places, appearing as fine pink, red, purple or bluish lines. If you press the skin, the colour often temporarily disappears, but will reappear quickly when blood gathers again.
If there is any distinction between the terms ‘spider veins’ and ‘thread veins’ it may relate to the size. The term spider veins may indicate smaller and more delicate web-like veins, such as those found on the face, while thread veins may be expected to be bigger. However, many clients refer to larger visible veins on the leg as spider veins as well.
The medical name for this condition is telangiectasia. They are smaller than varicose veins and tend not to cause any physical symptoms such as itchiness or discomfort. The main concern is that they are unsightly, especially when they appear on the face or legs.
It is important to have a correct diagnosis of spider veins so that the correct treatment can be delivered.
