Sun Exposure Could Cause Spider Veins
One of the most common causes of spider veins is one that you can do something about.
Sun exposure is a known factor in formation of facial thread vein problems such as spider veins and broken capillaries, which are most often seen on the nose and cheeks.
Exposing the skin to the sun exposes it to damaging ultraviolet rays – both UVA and UVB.
How Does Ultraviolet Light Damage Thread Veins?
- Ultraviolet rays can damage to the walls of the superficial blood vessels in the skin
- The damaged blood vessel walls thin and the veins dilate
- Dilated and broken blood vessels become visible through the overlying epidermis
Sun exposure also causes premature ageing of the skin and this can accentuate the appearance of spider veins, as the general condition of the skin can be affected in a number of ways by ultraviolet damage:
- Poor complexion
- Increased wrinkles and lines
- Loss of firmness/fullness
- Dryness
Avoiding Sun Exposure Problems
The ideal approach is to limit sun exposure:
- Avoid going out in the sun as much as possible
- Particularly avoid the peak hours of 11-3
- Seek shade wherever possible
- Wear a high SPF sunscreen e.g. SPF50
- Also wear a large, wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses for further protection
Prevention is better than cure and once they have appeared, spider veins will not simply disappear as they indicate the vessels have been damaged. However, there are treatments available.
Spider Vein Treatments
The latest treatment for facial thread veins involves use of advanced laser technology. The Nd:YAG laser can be used to address spider veins and other facial thread veins.
However, laser treatment can also promote healing and collagen renewal to generally improve the appearance and health of the skin, enhancing the overall result.
Skin is noticeably clearer after treatment.
