Summer Sun Can Cause Facial Thread Veins

With summer holidays on the way, doctors are reminding the public that sun exposure can cause facial thread veins.

Many people suffer from facial thread veins – the appearance of tiny red veins near the skin’s surface. These can be quite ageing and difficult to disguise with makeup.

One of the top potential causes is sun exposure and patients are therefore advised to practice ‘safe sun’ over the summer period

  • wear high factor sunscreen SPF30+
  • avoid the sun at peak times (11am-3pm in the UK, longer abroad in hot countries)
  • make sure you never burn
  • cover up with a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses

Treatment for Facial Thread Veins

Prevention is the best, but once thread veins have appeared, what are the treatment options?

Facial thread veins can be treated using a variety of techniques including microcautery techniques, laser thread vein or microsclerotherapy injection treatments.

Although treatment on the NHS is unlikely (as facial veins are classed as cosmetic, an area receiving very little funding), treatment is available in private clinics with no waiting lists.

Cosmedics Skin Clinics

Established in 2003, Cosmedics Skin Clinics offer thread vein removal at a selection of clinics based in London using the latest techniques with GMC-registered doctors and surgeons.
