Top Santé: Thread Vein Treatment SOS
Top Santé magazine’s feature on troublesome thread veins looks at the clinical treatment options – sclerotherapy, microsclerotherapy and lasers.
The feature explains that the size, severity and location of the thread veins will determine the best course of treatment. Dr Ross Perry, GP and founder of Cosmedics Skin Clinics and The London Vein Centre, was asked to provide some information for the writing of this article and he adds his own comments:
Sclerotherapy
Top Santé says:
“A solution is injected with a very small needle, superficially into the veins, causing the lining of the vein to swell and become sticky.
“Compression is then applied and, over a period of time, the vein will heal, close and fade away.”
Dr Ross Perry adds:
“There is some bruising after that lasts for 2-3 weeks and you need to wear support stockings for a week after the treatment. This is considered the gold standard in terms of treatment for leg thread veins as laser treatments seem more up to date the results are not always as good and are often more painful.”
Microsclerotherapy
Top Santé says:
“The same treatment as sclerotherapy but it involves the use of tiny needles to treat very thin and small veins. Some practitioners may offer this for the face but others favour laser for this delicate area.”
Lasers
Top Santé says:
“When laser energy is absorbed by blood inside the veins, it heats up the vessel wall, which collapses and dissolves.”
Dr Ross Perry adds:
“These work well for facial veins and cause the veins to collapse and seal up via the light energy. Treatments are well tolerated with a small amount of redness for up to a day or so after and are normally done every 3-4 weeks for 3-4 sessions.”
Thread Vein Treatment Prices – Top Tip
Top Santé shared this advice from Dr Ross Perry:
“It’s fairly easy to compare prices for injections, but laser systems vary widely in terms of the technology and training of the practitioner.
“Ensure you choose a suitably qualified person who has the right equipment for treating veins in particular as opposed to laser hair removal or skin tightening.”

Thread Vein Treatments
Cosmedics Skin Clinics’ main London Vein Treatment Centre offers a range of treatments for thread veins for the face and body.
- Laser treatment with the Harmony XL Pro targets problem capillaries, vessels or veins with a blast of laser energy. This damages the veins so that they shrink, shrivel up and eventually disappear. Laser energy also works to stimulate healing and cell renewal in the treated area.
- Treatment using micro-cautery laser is also available at all of the company’s skin treatment centres.
- Sclerotherapy injections are recommended for larger thread veins such as those on the legs.
