ClariVein® Varicose Veins Prices Confirmed

Prices from £1,895

Cosmedics Skin Clinics has confirmed the prices of ClariVein® varicose vein treatment at its London Vein Treatment Centres on Harley Street and also in the Putney clinic in South London.

Treatment will cost from £1,895.

The actual price is to be confirmed in consultation with the vascular surgeon after examination of the veins themselves.  The consultation includes a duplex scan to determine the exact nature of the veins. This enables the surgeon to recommend the best treatment.

What is ClariVein®?

ClariVein® is a new treatment at Cosmedics’ vein treatment centres. It works through a combination of mechanical and chemical action to destroy the vein. It is delivered via catheter under ultrasound and can be carried out as a day case on a ‘walk in walk out’ basis, so it is very appealing for clients looking for an effective solution for treating varicose veins which is also also convenient (compared to surgery).

This new treatment will complement other treatments for troublesome veins, as the clinics already offer a range of options for varicose veins:

Varicose Veins Linked to Deep Vein Thrombosis

A new study suggests that varicose veins is linked to a five-fold increase the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) – a condition which is potentially fatal.

Research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) involved 425,968 Taiwanese adults over the age of 20 with and without varicose veins. The group were followed up for an average of 7-and-a-half years, making it a good long-term study of the link between varicose veins and DVT.

  • Varicose vein sufferers were 5.3 times more likely to get deep vein thrombosis
  • This supports previous research – a German study put the link at 7 times more likely
  • People with varicose veins were also almost twice as likely to get a clot on the lung
  • Varicose veins were also linked to double the risk of ‘peripheral artery disease’ – a circulatory problem which reduces blood flow

The researchers said:

“Patients with varicose veins have increased levels of inflammatory and pro-thrombotic markers.  Varicose veins are rarely associated with serious health risks.  In contrast DVT, pulmonary embolism and peripheral arterial disease are vascular diseases that are associated with serious systemic effects.

“Whether the association between varicose veins and DVT is causal or represents a common set of risk factors requires further research.”

(source: JAMA medical journal)

One possible explanation put forward is that people with varicose veins have increased levels of inflammation or blood clotting abnormalities, but further research is required to understand how the two conditions are linked.

DVT – Deep Vein Thrombosis

Deep vein thrombosis in itself is relatively common, affecting around 1 in 1,000 people in the UK each year. DVT is where a blood clot forms in one of the body’s deep veins. It usually affects the legs.

The risk or concern is where a blood clot breaks free, travels to the lungs and blocks a vessel.  This is called a pulmonary embolism. It causes breathlessness and chest pain and can be fatal.

About 25,000 people in the UK die from a blood clot in a vein every year. This condition is also the third leading cause of heart attacks and strokes.

Anybody suffering from Varicose Veins is therefore advised to be aware of and more alert for the signs of DVT, which is potentially fatal.

Symptoms of DVT

  • pain, swelling and tenderness in one of your legs (usually the lower leg/calf area)
  • heavy ache feeling
  • warm/red skin in the area of the clot

Health Watch: EVLA Treatment on TV

Fox2

USA TV station Fox 2 featured EVLA – endovenous laser ablation – the latest treatment for varicose veins.

The programme explained:

“Ugly veins, pain and bleeding are symptoms of varicose veins in the legs can affect a person’s self-image and their ability to do their jobs.”

Vascular surgeon, Dr. Matthew Smeds explains that compression stockings can be an effective treatment:

“Compression stockings work for patients. What this does is it helps push the blood back from the toes all the way up to your thighs and it helps return the blood to your heart.”

However, compression stockings can be expensive and are not a practical solution for all patients.  Dr. Smeds then performs an endovenous laser procedure.  He explains:

“It’s like putting an IV in, basically below your knee.  And then through that IV, we pass a catheter up inside the vein which destroys the vein from the inside out.  And by destroying that vein, we’re decreasing the incompetence in your leg and so you are leaving only normal good veins behind.”

The reporter continues:

“The outpatient procedure is not done in an operating room but in a clinic, leaving many patients ready to bare their legs, work and stand as much as they need.”

Dr. Smeds concludes:

“They can do their jobs easier, if they don’t like the way their legs look their legs look better, .”

This procedure often allows patients to return to their normal levels of work and play and ready to bear their legs again.

Telegraph: How I finally got rid of my varicose veins… forever

The Telegraph features the story of Fiona, who had laser varicose vein treatment 20 years after vein stripping to remove a post-pregnancy varicose vein.

How I finally got rid of my varicose veins… forever

Fiona describes the discovery that her varicose veins were back:

“Somewhere in the middle of last summer, while on holiday in Cornwall, I was having one of those rare optimum moments. I felt that my weight – a constant struggle – was under control and that life was good. I mentioned to my husband as we were preparing to set off to the beach, me wearing a knee-length dress, that I was quite pleased with the shape of things – literally – and he said, ‘Yes, it’s all good, but have you noticed the back of your legs?’ I heard the needle scratch the record. ‘Obviously I haven’t seen the back of my legs. It’s not something I think to do all that often.’

“Immediately hysterical, I tried desperately to swivel and see what he was talking about. ‘Snakes,’ he murmured, nervously backing out of the bedroom.

“They were back: the nasty cluster of wormy invaders climbing up the back of my calves.  I hadn’t noticed; I had been too busy dealing with the myriad tiny daily disasters that confront me just looking at my front view in the mirror.”

Her previous experience of varicose veins was after having children.

“I know about varicose veins. After I had children in my 30s I noticed a few on my left leg, which I had removed. That was 20 years ago and it involved an operation where the vein from behind my left knee was literally ‘stripped’ out of the leg.

“Back then, there was no ultrasound scanning done on veins: the surgeon just looked at the offending area and made a decision about what to do. It was believed that simply stripping the vein from the leg while the patient was under general anaesthetic was enough to prevent it from recurring. Wrong! It turns out that the veins do actually grow back.”

She describes the experience of an ultrasound scan, which is now used to understand the precise nature of the vein, monitoring how the blood is flowing and establishing where and why it pools.

Her varicose vein removal in a private clinic was carried out as a ‘day case’ and started with laser/radiofrequency varicose vein treatment.  The procedure took an hour.

Fiona describes the practical issues involving compression stockings, which had to be worn for 21 days.  8 weeks after she had sclerotherapy for spider veins and thread veins, after which shorter compression stockings are required.

She concludes:

“I won’t be running out any time soon in bare legs and a miniskirt, but let’s face it, that was never going to happen. But, I will be able to walk down the path to the beach in my summer dress and not have to worry about the person behind me having to look at my snakes.”

Express: Why Winter for Varicose Vein Removal

For the estimated 3 in every 10 Brits who suffer from varicose veins, a recent article in the Express suggests that January and February are the best time to have treatment.

Read article in full at

Varicose veins? Why January and February are the best time of year to seek out treatment

The reason is that having treatment in winter means that the legs are ready to be exposed for the summer season, so patients no longer need to feel self-conscious about exposing their legs.

Varicose veins experts say that it is more common for clients to seek treatment in the summer, when they are going on holiday and want to be able to bare their legs to enjoy the sun.

Yet having treatment in advance means that the legs can be treated and healed in time for the warmer weather, even if multiple sessions are going to be required.  can be a good time for treating thread veins as the cold weather tends to make them worse.

Varicose Veins Advice

The Express article suggests:

“Varicose veins are rarely a serious condition and don’t usually require treatment.

“But speak to your GP if:

  • Your varicose veins are causing you pain or discomfort
  • The skin over your veins is sore and irritated
  • The aching in your legs is causing irritation at night and disturbing your sleep”

Varicose Vein Treatment

As varicose veins are not generally considered to be serious, treatment on the NHS usually starts with advice and.or compression stockings.

The Express article explains:

“If treatment is necessary, the NHS advises your doctor may first recommend up to six months of using compression stockings, taking regular exercise and elevating the affected area when resting.

“Other common treatment options include endothermic ablation – where heat is used to seal affected veins – sclerotherapy – this uses special foam to close the veins and ligation and stripping – the affected verbs are surgically removed.”

Can you get thread vein treatment on the NHS?

Thread veins are not a health risk and therefore they are very unlikely to be covered by the NHS in the vast majority of cases.

Even more troublesome varicose veins have to be ‘bad enough’ with complications such as phlebitis or eczema present in order to qualify for treatment. The criteria are a lot higher than they used to be. See our article on NHS Varicose Vein Treatment Grades.

Similarly thread veins are considered a cosmetic problem and not considered to affect health or quality of life, which means that the NHS will not offer treatment for the condition.

Patients looking to have treatment for them will need to look to the private sector.

Thread Vein Treatment Options

There are private companies such as the London Vein Treatment Centre which specialise in offering a broad range of vein treatments for private patients. These often use specialist technology and the doctors offering treatment are trained and experienced in vein problems.

Options at the London Vein Treatment Centre include:

has the latest Harmony XL Pro laser machine, which provides a .

  • Laser treatment with the technologically advanced Harmony XL Pro
This gentle treatment targets problem capillaries, vessels or veins with laser energy, which damages the veins so that they shrink, shrivel up and eventually disappear. This is suitable for thread veins on the face or body
  • Micro-cautery laser treatment is available at all of the company’s skin treatment centres.
This uses a superfine cautery device and is ideal for smaller facial veins, capillaries and spider veins
  • Sclerotherapy injections work to destroy the vein from within
This treatment is suitable for larger veins, such as those on the legs

London Vein Treatment Centre

As well as thread vein treatments, Cosmedics Skin Clinics also offer private varicose vein treatment and see many patients who have been refused treatment on the NHS.

Their London Vein Treatment Centre offers EVLA (endovenous laser ablation) laser varicose vein removal with a vascular surgeon with prices starting at £1,650 per leg (1 vein).

They also offer foam sclerotherapy and micro surgery in order to provide a tailor-made service with the most appropriate treatment for each individual.

The Mirror Busts Top 10 Varicose Vein Myths

“Top 10 myths about varicose veins busted – and if you can do anything to prevent them”

Varicose veins affect at least a third of the population, yet there are many myths about why certain people seem to suffer from the condition.

The Mirror explores and explodes the top 10 misconceptions.

  1. Workers who stand on their feet all day are more at risk of varicose veins
Getting varicose veins is more likely to be caused by genetics. However, if you do have a predisposition to varicose veins, standing and sitting will cause faster deterioration and increase the risk of complications.
  2. If you can’t see varicose veins, you haven’t got them
Approximately 30% of the adult population has venous disease affecting their legs, but only half of these have visible varicose veins. Varicose veins are often felt before they’re seen, with aching legs the first indication for most patients.
  3. You can prevent varicose veins
As the key factor is genetic, you can’t really prevent them. However, you can reduce the risk of complications.
  4. Crossing your legs causes varicose veins
Crossing your legs is not a direct factor, although a sedentary lifestyle will increase the risk of complications and deterioration.
  5. Only the old and overweight suffer from varicose veins
Varicose veins can affect the young and fit as well as the old and overweight.  However, the longer we live, the more varicose veins are likely to become apparent. Those who are less physically active are prone to earlier complications and deterioration.
  6. Varicose veins are cosmetic and don’t need treatment
The NHS will not treat varicose veins unless there are other signs or symptoms such as discomfort or ulcers. However, without treatment, the veins are likely to worsen over time.
  7. They can be caused by pregnancy
Pregnancy doesn’t cause varicose veins, but the increased blood flow can make them more obvious as the veins are nearer the surface.
  8. There’s no point operating on varicose veins as they will only grow back
Old fashioned vein ‘stripping’ had a relatively high recurrence rate, but modern laser technology (EVLA) has a much higher success rate.
  9. Men can’t get varicose veins
Varicose veins affect both women and men, although women are more likely to seek help earlier.
  10. Varicose veins only occur on the legs
They are most commonly associated with the legs, but can actually occur in any malfunctioning vein below the heart.

So in summary, the Mirror explains that the key factor in varicose veins is a genetic predisposition – the problem very often runs in the family. Varicose veins are an inherited condition relating to inefficient valves in the veins which cause venous reflux – pooling of the blood as the valves give way and stop pumping all the blood efficiently back to the heart.

Issues such as weight gain, lifestyle (standing, sitting, exercise) age and pregnancy are factors which make complications or deterioration of the veins more likely, but they don’t actually form the root cause of varicose veins.
